| |
|
| HeatSync is a very unique and peculiar kind of place. This can make the way we do things seem bizarre, inefficient, or downright strange. This page aims to help you understand the "Why" behind the "How" of how things are run.

|
| |
| == The Core Values of HeatSync ==
| |
|
| |
| The core values of the HeatSync Community can perhaps best be summed up as Making, Learning, and Doing.
| |
|
| |
| === Making ===
| |
| [http://youtu.be/_otrgJ8Lmx4 We believe that Making is important.]
| |
|
| |
| Making is a process of creation. It is taking the objects and raw materials around you, and molding them into a new form. We get great satisfaction from taking the things around us and turning them into new objects and works of art that now belong to ourselves. HeatSync is a place where we create, rather than consume.
| |
|
| |
| === Learning ===
| |
|
| |
| We love to learn. And we love sharing our knowledge.
| |
|
| |
| Periodically we have "Tear Apart Nights", where we take a heap of electronics and dissect them. We are always taking things apart, probing their secrets, and sharing what we learn. The world around us, and especially technology, fascinates us. Learning more knowledge and skills is its own pleasure, and are powerful tools as we go and Make and Do.
| |
|
| |
| === Doing ===
| |
|
| |
| We strive to always be proactive in pursuing our goals. Creating and Learning are active processes, which require action on the part of the individuals. We operate on the principles of being a [http://www.communitywiki.org/DoOcracy Do-ocracy]. We have no paid staff, only the volunteer efforts of our community members. The cumulative effect of the contributions of our individual members is what makes us great.
| |
|
| |
| == Achieving our Goals ==
| |
|
| |
| Achieving the goals of Making, Learning, and Doing is why we exist. The lab is a physical space dedicated to these activities. We fill it with tools for people to use for their projects. We have classes and events where we are teaching and learning skills and knowledge. And every day, members are helping others one-on-one with their projects. We collaborate in our efforts to do all of this through our mailing list and [[Hack_Your_Hackerspace]].
| |
|
| |
| == The importance of the "Community" ==
| |
|
| |
| HeatSync Labs is a Community, a very diverse collection of individuals united by a common goal of making and doing awesome projects, and sharing our knowledge and creations with each other and the whole world. This ideal of being a Community first and foremost is an important one to remember, because that is what drives the decisions about how we operate. The Community, through the [[Hack_Your_Hackerspace]] process, is given final say on what goes on and how things work. At times this may seem inefficient and messy, but

| |
|
| |
|
| |
| == Do-ocracy ==
| |
|
| |
| HeatSync Labs operates on the principles of being a ''Do-cracy''[http://www.communitywiki.org/DoOcracy]. The fundamental idea is that the responsibility for something falls to the person who is willing to take on that responsibility. Constructive feedback is very useful and powerful, but ultimately the one who actually accomplishes the task gets the final say in how it is done. Being critical of another persons way of accomplishing the responsibilities they volunteered to take on is known as Bike Shedding[http://bikeshed.com/][http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_law_of_triviality]. The line between constructive feedback and bike shedding is pretty fine, and often comes down to the way you word your thoughts about how something could be done better.

|
| |
| == Rules and Structure ==
| |
|
| |
| By design, the structure of the lab and the community is very loose and fluid. We are wary of hard and fast rules, and absolutes. The overarching objective is to empower people to make, create, and learn. This means striking a fine balance between too many rules and too few rules. We try to keep our rules minimal, because rules can restrict people's ability to make the things they want. What rules we do have are designed to allow as many people the opportunity to make things as possible. To make that possible, we have rules about proper equipment use so people do not harm themselves, others, or the tools.
