Overview

HeatSync Labs has a collection of woodworking tools, but not a dedicated area specific just for woodworking. Some tools will need to be used outside if making excessive dust and debris that would be a fire hazard. As of this edit there is not a specific wood shop champion. If you have questions post on the Slack channel under woodshop.

Woodworking Safety

Always ask before using our tools for the first time. You must have a waiver filled out. If you don't know what you are doing ask for help.

These were some general safety precautions. Other safety precautions may apply to specific tools

If you are tired, sick, or under the influence of drugs (prescription or otherwise) do not use the tools.

Don't get distracted and don't let others distract you while using the tool

Wear

• Safety glasses
• Ear protection
• Mask for dust protection
• Closed toe shoes

Do not wear

• Gloves (except to change bits)
• Loose clothing
• Long sleeves
• Tie or scarf
• Long hair that is loose (use a hat or put into a ponytail)
• Jewelry; rings, watches,bracelets, long necklaces

• Check the environment for risks to yourself and others
  • Electric cords or other trip hazards
  • Things that may be in the way or get knocked over
  • Lighting is sufficient
  • Those nearby are wearing proper safety equipment as well
• Check the tool while turned off AND unplugged
  • bits or blades are firmly in place
  • Tool is in a safe position and won't tip/fall
  • No signs of damage to the blades, bits, power cord
  • Parts that should move freely are doing so and those that shouldn't move aren't
  • Dust collection connected
• Check your material
  • Look for any staples, nails, screws or other metal in your material
  • Make sure the wood is flat and can sit on tool surface without rocking
  • Be aware of any parts that may be coming loose like knots or cracks in your wood
  • Clamp the material if it needs to stay in place
• Alert others before you begin (glasses, dust, noise)
• Cut away from you, think "where are my hands and fingers going to end up?"
• Adjust tools when they are turned off and unplugged
  • Be sure they are turned off and bits or blades are clear when plugging them in
• Never start the tool with the wood in contact with the cutting surface
• Wait for the tool to stop rotating before attempting to do any cleanup
• Keep hands away from the cutting tools and moving parts
  • Use push blocks, push sticks, clamps, and other means where sensible to minimize risk to your hands
• Use the dust collection features to reduce dust hazards and reduce cleanup
